Sweet Overload

The RAILS Band Gig Diary - Entry #71 Show Date: November 19, 2009.  Venue: The Rails Nightclub.

It was our weekly full band show, but this week drummer, Chops Baxton, couldn’t make it, so the line-up was Lolly Gladstone (me) on keys and vocals, Jeremy Barracuda on electric guitar and harmonies, and Jill Garnet on bass guitar and harmonies.

After the show, we had the munchies, so went in search of sweet things.

mmm, nom nom.  Just one more.

Maybe we didn’t really need that last piece.

Here is a close-up of Jeremy to show you that he’s ok and I didn’t make him sick by forcing him to eat too much candy for the sake of the blog.  Also, I wanted to show you the snappy collar on the shirt, because I realized too late that it somehow got left off in the previous photos.

Thanks to the sweeties who came to the show, and to you for reading this post!

Today the line-up will include Lolly Gladstone (vocals & keys), Jeremy Barracuda (electric guitar & harmonies) and Jill Garnet (bass & harmonies).  In honour of our US friends celebrating Thanksgiving, Tom the Turkey will be sitting in on percussion, as regular drummer, Chops Baxton, can’t make it.  We can be quite certain that Tom will have his drum sticks with him!

This is not him in the photo! This fine meal was prepared by DavidDM Therian of Kitchen Kreations.

Here is Tom’s story .. a gift at Accessories by Eolande, available until Monday.

It’s a Long Way Down

The RAILS Band Gig Diary - Entry #70 Show Date: November 5, 2009.  Venue: The Rails Nightclub.

After our show we went to a hotel bar for a drink.  Then we checked out all the cool art they had hung in the stairways, and ended up climbing all the up to the top of the building.

There was a door at the top, so we slipped outside to admire the view.

Then we realized the door had locked behind us.  We were stuck, with no option other than to climb down the fire escape.

Phew … glad to be on the ground again.  My vertigo almost got the better of me there!

Here’s a photograph taken during the show, taken by cru slade . I got it from their wiki at cruslade.com.

Fun at The Freakheim

The RAILS Band Gig Diary - Entry #69 Show Date: October 31, 2009.  Venue: The Freakheim Funeral Home

Performing in Second Life is quite different to real life, in that in SL your audience actually hears what you say between songs.  In rl you can say something like “Frank’s got a foaming stout” and it will sound just like “thanks for coming out”.  Not so in sl, where you need to have something interesting to say, in addition to having the music down pat.  So when I first began playing in sl, I had some learning to do in regards to chatting with the audience.  This is a long way of saying that I think I may have sucked at the beginning!

Good thing this didn’t deter one of our first listeners .. I recall a handsome, long haired avatar standing slightly to the left of the stage at one of our early shows, who we’ve now come to know as one of our best friends in SL, Rykk Ferraris.

Rykk is a creative dj with a bottomless supply of interesting music.  He is also head undertaker at his own club called “The Freakheim Funeral Home”, where he is joined by a bunch of great and friendly helpers, including his wife Kaedy who adds incredible unique details to the look of the place.  The Freakheim is always a good time, whether we’re performing or listening to a dj set.

Halloween is a big holiday for this group and Jeremy and I were pleased to be invited to perform at their party.  Following our set, Rykk took over for 2 hours in the dj booth.  Another fun aspect of The Freakheim is that they like to challenge your inventory management skills and have you change your outfit to suit a theme, throughout their events. You can be certain that you’ll never leave the place wearing the same thing you had on when you arrived! (of course, this is voluntary and you’re welcome to wear whatever you want).

And there are prizes, as these outfit changes come with the chance to win $lindens for the best look.  I was honoured and happy to say that I won a prize, in a tie for “Best Halloween Formal Wear”.  In the photo, I am with club hostess, the sweet and witty, Rhyanna Saphir (wearing the orange gown).  I just loved how her gown floated to the music.

The 3rd annual Freakheim Halloween party was a very good time indeed!

(wow, 2 posts in one day .. that’s what you get when you move the clocks back and give me an extra hour! lol … actually I just wanted to get these Halloween entries done ’cause if I didn’t they’d look very stale by the time I posted them!)

Motley Crew

The RAILS Band Gig Diary - Entry #68 Show Date: October 29, 2009.  Venue: The Rails Nightclub.

In Second Life, avatars count the years from the date they first logged in, also known as their “rez day”.  My 3rd one was this week, meaning that I first entered this fantastic world three years ago around Halloween, a time of year that is highly celebrated here.  As a newbie I remember being not at all certain who was in costume and who was just being their ‘normal’ avatar.  It was extremely enchanting and has held my interest ever since.

Here we are for our show on the Thursday before Halloween, as Jill & Chops could not be with us on the actual date.  I am the bee.  Bass player Jill Garnet was, for once, the tallest of the group as the skeleton.  Drummer, Chops Baxton was suitably dressed as a little monkey, and guitarist, Jeremy Barracuda, cut a fine figure as a … hmm? … not really sure what he was!

Creators really go all out with their generosity.  Costumes and decorations abound and there are many haunted venues to visit.  You can even knock on doors and receive a trick or a treat.  And there’s apple bobbing, where your little avatar actually dunks her head into a tub of apples!

All in all, a very fun time of year!
